Fabrics, Technical Features, and Eco-Friendly Benefits in Women’s Sustainable Rainwear

Fabrics, Technical Features, and Eco-Friendly Benefits in Women’s Sustainable Rainwear

Our Changing World
In today’s world we can no longer ignore the needs of our planet, as difficult as it is, we have to address some of our consumption behaviour. The fashion industry also has to do this and very slowly it is beginning to change. BYBROWN is at the forefront of this change as these principles have always been in our DNA.

DWR and PFA’s or Forever Chemicals
One of the most important developments in sustainable rainwear is the phasing out of PFAS (Perfluoroalkyl and and polyfluoroalkyl substances) ; often called ‘forever chemicals.’
PFAs are chemicals that don't break down, leading to significant environmental contamination and health concerns.
Many brands are transitioning to shorter-chain PFA’s (C6) which are less damaging than the longer C10 chains, but ultimately the industry is stepping over to more natural, PFAS-free alternatives (C0 treatments).
While PFAS-free alternative DWR performs well and is often OEKO-TEX certified, its main trade-off is slightly lower oil/stain resistance and the need for occassional reactivation.
At BYBROWN, all new production uses a PFAS-free finish called Ruco Dry Eco Plus, also known as Bionic Finish Eco—a safer, more responsible choice for both people and planet.

Our Waterproof, Breathable Membrane
As well as DWR coatings, our coats also keep you warm and dry using a technical membrane. Our membrane has a water column above 20,000 mm meaning it can withstand extremely high water pressure—far more than everyday rain.
The water column indicates the level of water pressure that a fabric can withstand before water penetrates it with higher numbers meaning better waterproofing against water pressure.

To put this into perspective:

  • 5,000 mm: light rain
  • 10,000 mm: heavy showers
  • 15,000 mm: storms, snow
  • 20,000 mm+: extreme outdoor protection

This membrane is also breathable. Its hydrophilic (water-loving) molecular chains absorb moisture vapour from inside the coat and release it outward, preventing buildup of sweat and humidity. The result: you stay dry from the outside and the inside.

Recycling Polyester
Generally synthetics are used in rainwear because they are tough, performance materials that can endure in heavy weather conditions.
Traditionally the technical membranes, which give both waterproofness and breathability are made of polyurethane leading to a blended material that can’t be recycled. Our state of the art membrane is made of 100% polyester which means our materials are mono materials and therefore recyclable.

As a fossil product polyester/plastic suffers from the misuse of single-use plastics and the over consumption within our society.
However Polyester/plastic has many benefits when it comes to recycling.

Recycled polyester has a much higher up-cycling quality than other textiles, giving a strong fibre that can be recycled multiple times. Recycled polyester offers several benefits:

  • It can be recycled multiple times without major loss in performance.
  • It has a much stronger upcycling potential than most other fibres.
  • It reduces reliance on virgin petroleum.
  • It gives waste materials a new life.

We aim to run a supply chain that is fully circular, producing all our coats from recycled BYBROWN’s goal is clear: produce all coats from recycled polyester by 2030, completing a fully circular supply chain.

After Purchase Care:
Extending Longevity Sustainability has always been part of BYBROWN’s ethos, trying to make responsible decisions wherever possible;

  • in the material we use,
  • where we do our production,
  • where are products are sold,
  • as well as smaller details, such as the use of recycled labels in the coats and recycled packaging.

After sales care is also an important aspect, on average 20% of a garment’s environmental impact happens at the consumer use stage. Proper care is therefore essential. BYBROWN coats require minimal washing, we encourage spot cleaning.
When it is needed the coats can be machine washed on a delicates cycle at 30ºC.
The coats can be put in the tumble drier at a low temperature.
When needed the DWR can be renewed with a PFA free, waterproof wash-in treatment that restores water repellency.
With simple care, our coats maintain their performance for many years, allowing you to wear your favourite BYBROWN coat for longer.

Repair instead of Replace
Fashion cannot be truly sustainable without rethinking the way we consume.
We encourage our community to move away from a linear take-make-waste consumption style to one where garments are cared for, repaired, and cherished.
That’s why BYBROWN offers a repair service for all coats.

Crafted in Europe
All BYBROWN coats are made in Europe through long-standing partnerships in Portugal and Poland.
We believe in keeping our manufacturing in Europe as this ensures

  • higher transparency
  • responsible labour conditions
  • exceptional craftsmanship
  • reduced shipping distances

This approach is neither fast nor cheap, but it guarantees quality and integrity in every stitch.

Made With Love, Design, and Real Quality
When you choose a BYBROWN coat you treat yourself to something made with love, design, and true quality. A statement piece for yourself to protect you from the elements but at the same time treating the planet with more respect.
Our coats help you make that step towards circularity.
At BYBROWN, we believe in fair value, our pieces are priced honestly, crafted with care, and designed to last.
We stand for thoughtful consumption, slow fashion, and repairing rather than replacing. It’s simply how we choose to make clothing.

Outerwear for your commute

Outerwear for your commute

From Bike to Train: Outerwear to fit your commute.

Do rainy commutes make getting to work stressful? Are you tired of choosing between staying dry and looking good?

At BYBROWN, we believe you shouldn’t have to compromise.
Here’s what makes our rainwear different:

We’ve spent years researching and developing outerwear that’s built to protect you – not just from the weather, but from the discomfort and frustration that come with it. Our coats are designed to help you move through your day feeling comfortable, confident, and prepared for anything, whatever the weather.

Waterproof & Breathable: Stay dry without overheating

Sustainable Materials: Made from innovative, eco-conscious, technical fabrics. Either made from100% recycled polyester or a combination of recycled coffee grounds and PET our coats prove you don’t have to choose between fashion and environmental responsibility

  • European Craftsmanship: Our craftsmanship, honed in Europe, focuses on durability — because a sustainable raincoat is one you’ll wear for years, not just one season.
  • Style + Function: Elegant silhouettes meet high performance techwear with no compromises on style.

With BYBROWN, you can step outside knowing you’re ready for every storm, every commute, and every challenge the day throws at you.

Commute with Confidence

Rain shouldn’t control your day — and with BYBROWN it doesn’t.

Whether you drive, cycle, take public transport, or walk, we design rainwear that keeps you protected, comfortable, and effortlessly stylish.

Cycling – Agile, Spirit, Moxie & Nova

Cycling in the city can be unpredictable — especially in our hometown of Amsterdam. You need rainwear that gives you freedom to move, keeps you visible, and protects you from sudden showers. It has to be made of breathable materials to keep you comfortable so you arrive at your destination looking as fresh as when you left.

  • Moxie Rainskirt – This skirt transforms into trousers for total freedom of movement. Pair it with our new Nova Bomber Jacket for head-to-toe protection.
  • Agile Raindress – Flowing and unrestrictive, designed for full movement in an upright riding position. A reflective strip down the back keeps you visible, while the hood offers full side-view visibility for safer cycling.
  • Spirit – A statement piece this raincoat is lightweight, breathable, and perfect for commuters who want performance and style.

Public Transport – Wave & Spirit

Commuting by bus, tram, or train means navigating changing environments — cold wind one moment, a crowded, stuffy carriage the next.

Our technical fabrics are both waterproof and breathable, keeping you dry without overheating.

  • Spirit – Comes with a detachable warm layer for added versatility.
  • Wave – Lets you create your own layers underneath for year-round comfort.

When everyone’s staring at you on the metro, you won’t know if it’s because of your style — or because you’re the only one not dripping wet.

Walking – Wave, Stream & Spirit

Walking is the most mindful way to commute — if you’re wearing the right outerwear.

Moxie - for walking in style.

  • Wave & Spirit – Offer extra protection for autumn and winter, with Spirit’s longer length giving you even more protection. Spirit’s detachable liner also protects against the cold.
  • Stream – Lightweight, breathable, and perfect for summer walks.

These coats let you enjoy the journey, shielded from puddle-splashes and speeding bikes, so you can arrive calm and collected.

Car – Stream

When you’re in the car, comfort matters. You don’t want a coat that feels bulky or restrictive in a confined space.

That’s where Stream comes in — a lightweight, mid-length raincoat that moves with you. It’s stylish, easy to wear, and offers full waterproof protection for those moments when you do step out into the rain.

Rainwear Reimagined

At BYBROWN, we challenge the idea that rainwear is just functional. Our coats are designed to be part of your wardrobe — something you want to wear, rain or shine.

Because staying dry shouldn’t mean hiding who you are.

Our designs let you feel protected, stylish, and completely yourself.

So tell us — when it comes to your commute, what problem would we solve for you?

Our outspoken logo

Our outspoken logo

Over the past 10 years within the fashion industry there has been a trend towards minimalist logos. This trend kick-started by Yves Saint Laurent was soon followed by fashion houses, Calvin Klein, Balenciaga, Balmain and Burberry. The ideology was to make these brands more global by moving away from specific references to their heritage and simplifying their form.

BYBROWN is the exception that proves the rule, going against this trend and making a bold statement with our new logo. Over the years BYBROWN has become an innovator within the world of rainwear. With our tailoring approach we challenge the very boxy silhouette associated with rainwear.

bybrown logo and iconic b, graphic design

Developing the logo we worked with Amsterdam based Art Director Sofie Splinder and Berlin based Graphic Designer Vladimir Llovet Casademont. This extremely talented, creative team designed a logo that felt just perfect for what BYBROWN stands for and what we want to achieve.

The logo is something unexpected and a little controversial. It has the punk element which reflects the British upbringing and heritage of BYBROWN’S founder and designer Melanie Brown. It encapsulates the dualism within BYBROWN, a non-conformity which is juxtapositioned by the very clean ‘tailoring’ font, adding a touch of premium luxury. The logo has a rhythm of contrasts which follows the design ethos of the brand.

It has an energy which translates to the garments; when a woman puts on our coats, she feels empowered and energised. The coats protect her from a flash of rain or lightning. The logo also represents the craftsmanship in the brand with our monogram ‘B’ that has the same shape as a needle or a pair of shears, sharp and pointed on the outside and curved on the inside like the tools of the tailoring / couture atelier.

Blaze - The story

Blaze - The story

Innovation and movement have always been part of BYBROWN’s DNA. We believe in the power of change and reinvention.
Thus when we saw the opportunity to collaborate on a brand new project, involving both our fashion expertise and our care for eco-responsibility, we just had to do it!

hand-printed t-shirt process with silk screening.

And so our t-shirt BLAZE project came to be. A unique limited-edition of t-shirts, in collaboration with visual artist Marnix Postma.
The collaboration combines our expertise in tailoring and design with the proficiency of Postma’s printing techniques.

Our logo is unsurprisingly the highlight of the Blaze t-shirt. It reinforces the bold statement of non-conformity and endless creativity.

Using water based inks, the logo is hand-printed on the front of the t-shirt using a silk screen technique, where a raster gives the t-shirt a punky effect.
It creates a complementary contrast with the Lenzing® tencel yarns which have a silky smoothness that gives the fabric a luxurious feel and appearance.

WORK BY MARNIX POSTMA

MIKEY T-SHIRT

This collaboration was also an opportunity for Marnix Postma to create his own line of t-shirts, MICKEY. We brought to the table our tailoring skills and production competence, working with Marnix on his black t-shirts with his signature logo. The yellow, double embroidered logo represents Marnix’ visual language, developed over years of experimentation and practice.

Worth II

Worth II

We are proud to announce that we have been selected as final participants in the WORTH II partnership project with "Rent the Rain.

We are collaborating with Hotel V and their guests at Hotel V Fizeaustraat can now explore Amsterdam in style, renting a premium, technical raincoat during their stay. This forward thinking, 3-month rental project started at the beginning of April, giving the guests protection in case of bad weather, and let's face it, the weather can be a little unpredictable when visiting Amsterdam!

How it works

The coats can be pre-booked before the guest’s stay or at reception on arrival. When a guest decides to make use of the rental service, the coat is personally delivered to them at the beginning of their stay. They can then fully enjoy Amsterdam in style, whatever the weather. When checking out, they hand the raincoat back in at reception, paying for the coat rental together with their hotel bill and continue their journey, carefree.

We are very happy to be collaborating with Macedonian-based software developer SOLS. In the next 6 months we will co-develop and implement a new sustainable business model; from single ownership to communal ownership and sharing. In this project we will develop an inclusive coat rental service that is durable and recyclable, herewith reducing single-use plastic, stimulating efficient use of resources, and shifting the consumers’ relationship with clothes. Through the rental service, we offer a convenient service that promotes circularity. Rental offers alternative ideas about consumption, moving away from ownership, and creating social impact. By replacing single-use ponchos and short-life umbrellas with recycled raincoats, we avoid waste and reduce CO2 emissions, water usage, and human toxicity potential (HTP) in production. The positive impact of our business case is further reinforced making the first steps towards a fully circular loop in which the 100% mono-polyester raincoats are up-cycled. With both SOLS’ and BYBROWN’s mission toward transforming the current fashion industries’ consumption patterns, we are very much looking forward to our collaboration. With the support and backing of the WORTH project, we believe we can challenge the status quo and contribute to the necessary change.

This initiative is supported by WORTH Partnership Project and is funded by the COSME program of the European Union for the Competitiveness of Enterprises and Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs).

Lena Library

Lena Library
BYBROWN rainwear now available for renting at Lena Library in Amsterdam,

Teaming up with Lena Library, BYBROWN is now available for renting. Visit the Lena Library store in the heart of Amsterdam or go to the web-shop.

The future of sustainable fashion is about renting our clothes and buying consciously. We have to re-think our choices and rental offers a promising, new solution to textile waste.

'Fashion is about the look and feel that clothes give you; a reflection of the individual and society. Sustainability is part of this reflection.'- Melanie Brown

LENA was founded in 2014 and is one of the first shops to introduce a loan model within the fashion industry.

“We believe in the transition to a circular fashion system, where we focus on extending the lifespan of clothing. In this way we reduce excessive amounts of purchases and utilise existing clothing more efficiently. In actual terms, this means less overproduction and less textile waste.”- Lena Library

Clothing can be borrowed via the pay-as-you-borrow system. This makes it possible to borrow flexibly and easily without being tied to anything. Each item of clothing has a daily price and can be borrowed for as long as desired. If you fall in love with a borrowed garment and you want to purchase it, you can do so with a try-before-you-buy discount.

Face masks

Face masks

BYBROWN believes that the face mask is a canvas for self-expression and a means of protection, not only for yourself but also others. We are proud to have been one of the first to make non-medical face masks in the Netherlands, providing not only protection, but comfort through an anatomical design which leaves the ears free.

When the first case of COVID-19 appeared in the Netherlands on February 27th 2020, we received advice from a close Hong Kong relative of the brand, about the benefits of wearing a face mask. We were inspired and believed that we could learn from him as he had previously experienced the SARS-outbreak in 2003. We quickly anticipated and developed an accessible design, making several masks for our friends and family, although it felt rather strange putting any layer of protection on our faces. At that time, we didn’t fully grasp the magnitude of the situation and the idea of such an intrusion on our freedom was a faraway notion in our heads.

THE BYBROWN TEAM WEARING THE VERY FIRST MASKS

DONATION MASKS FOR COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKERS

When the Dutch government announced the closure of schools, cafes and restaurants on March 15th, it was a solid sign that the situation was serious.
After Melanie Brown posted a video of herself wearing the BYBROWN mask, a few early adopters, including Ingeborg van Lieshout, a journalist, picked up on it and were interested in getting one. After sending a mask to Ingeborg, we were unexpectedly mentioned in an article on Bright.nl (now RTLnieuws.nl). As a result, the BYBROWN website was flooded with visitors searching for the masks. For us, it felt natural to extend our offer and adapt this idea of protection to the demand. We then started producing the masks in our Amsterdam studio.

At the time, there was also a shortage of medical masks for health workers in the Netherlands, thus we felt the need to contribute by making masks according to the specifications of Buurtzorg, Buurtdiensten and Educared. For every BYBROWN mask sold, we donated two to community health workers in Brabant and The Asylum Centre in Amsterdam.
The interest in our face masks grew despite the WHO and the Dutch government's advice against wearing them. We truly believed in the advice of virologists on using face masks to help stop the spread of viruses. We hoped to offer protection to the community, bringing us a step closer to continuing life as usual. Furthermore, we discovered an opportunity to bring creativity and personality to the face masks, turning them into a fashion statement, taking them away from the sole purpose of protection.

On April 21st, we produced a limited edition of naturally dyed organic cotton masks in collaboration with Lucila Kenny. The 30 masks were dyed with the heartwood of lockwood trees which gave a beautiful purple colour. Within 48 hours, they were all sold out. Later, BYBROWN’s identity and equestrian inspiration were translated into a printed mask by artist Marnix Postma. The designs were screen printed at the AGA Lab in Amsterdam, adding craftsmanship and design value to our selection.

The month of May arrived with more features in magazines, to name a few, NRC Newspaper Magazine, thanks to Milou van Rossum and RTLnieuws.nl, thanks to Ingeborg van Lieshout who wrote an article called ‘The top 10 masks in The Netherlands’, which instantly lead to unforeseen exposure and increasing demand for face masks. Soon our production capacity couldn’t be maintained and we needed to upscale. Collaborating with our long-term manufacturing partner in Poland, who  instantly started producing the face masks following our signature pattern.

LUCILA KENNY'S NATURAL DYEING PROCESS

COLLABORATION ANNOUNCEMENT

On August 12th, Willem te Wierik from CS Digital Media approached us with an exciting project. CS Digital Media invited BYBROWN to be part of an experimental new way of advertising. The idea was to set up digital advertising screens in metro stations in Amsterdam and Rotterdam featuring BYBROWN in a special campaign showcasing face masks. This was a great opportunity to encourage the wearing of high-design face masks as a fashion statement.

Throughout the past 9 months, we've experienced days with only 2 orders and those with more than 200 orders. Making and selling the face masks has been a very interesting journey for us, one where we’ve seen the ebb and flow of demand in line with the changing COVID-19 measurements. One of the most interesting aspects is taking the process from product design to upscaling and marketing, which usually takes at least 6 months, in the time scale of 6 weeks.

It’s been an adventure that has shaped us as a brand and added yet another layer to BYBROWN. It is unsure whether this product will stay with us in the future, but BYBROWN will be here to offer our tailored protection.
